about

“One Day at a Time” is a song about the daily encounters the average person has with self-doubt, low self-esteem and anxiety.

One of the underpinning ideas of the song is that experiencing mental health issues does not necessarily mean you are in the depths of despair; these encounters are universal.

It is a message of hope to everyone who grapples day in, day out with these “demons” and a reminder to practice self-compassion as you weather the storm.

lyrics

Holding on to a line of a song and searching for words to live by
It’s this loneliness that strikes like a fist and hits you right between the eyes
Staggering, reeling you stave off this feeling that’s followed you most of your life
You’re empty, you’re hollow, a hard pill to swallow, a notion that cuts like a knife
It’s so hard to see the wood from the trees when you’re at war with your own mind
But each war is long and to keep carrying on, you can only take it one day at a time

Hoping for a hole in the floor to take you away from this room
It’s your past mistakes that give you the shakes and a strong sense of impending doom
Feel the world take you, embrace you, encase you, till there’s nothing left of you at all
You feel like a dot, a small factor, an actor, just waiting for their curtain call
When you look all around, everyone’s on hard ground while you’re walking a high trapeze line
But you can’t give in or let your demons win, you can only take it one day at a time

Having doubts and closing your mouth instead of just speaking your mind
It’s that age-old quest to ease your unrest for contentment is so hard to find
Is this feeling brand new or has it always been with you, the question chills you to the bone
And that wise man who said that it’s all in your head doesn’t have much going on in his own
You know it’s not a case of someday and some place you’ll wake up, you'll arise and feel fine
On this crooked road you’ll bear a great load, you can only take it one day at a time
