about

Winter is my favourite time of year but it can also be a period of isolation, vulnerability and fear for many people. I wrote this song last November after my Dad passed away and I experienced the dark side of winter for the first time. The song is a plea to the season of winter for kindness and relief. I feel that it is especially relevant this year as we fumble through a winter lockdown. I hope that the song can be of some comfort to people who experience winter in this way.

lyrics

Lady Winter, you’ve come back again
It’s been a full twelve months but it feels like ten
You’ve come to torment all the women and men
You’ll freeze us all straight to the bone

Lady Winter, remember last year
You darkened our doorways and took all our cheer
The folks on the pavement are living in fear
It’s worse when you’re living alone

CHORUS
Lady Winter, go easy on me
Gentle as the leaves that fall from the oak tree
Lady Winter, go easy on me

Lady Winter, I now know the reason
Why all of the swallows fly south for a season
Your cold is unyielding and nothing is shielding
My heart from your cruel icy chill

Lady Winter, the ice on the ground
Reminds me of who is and who’s not around
I listen for their voices but I can’t hear a sound
I feel like a lamb on a hill

CHORUS
Lady Winter, go easy on me
Gentle as the leaves that fall from the oak tree
Lady Winter, go easy on me

Lady Winter, a warm winter coat
Is all that I have for to keep me afloat
All of my hours I fully devote
To keeping your gloom from my mind

Lady Winter, I vow and I swear
That if you be kind then I’ll greet you next year
And I’ll sing all your praises to folks everywhere
Your virtues I promise to find

CHORUS
Lady Winter, go easy on me
Gentle as the leaves that fall from the oak tree

Lady Winter, go easy on me
Gentle as the leaves that fall from the oak tree
Lady Winter, go easy on me
